Keeping Warm Safely This Winter |

Dear Resident
As temperatures drop, the use of portable heaters and temporary heating equipment often increases. While useful, these appliances can present a significant fire risk if they are not used correctly. The following advice will help businesses and residents stay safe while keeping warm throughout the winter months.
In the workplace Responsible persons should ensure: Heaters are used in accordance with manufacturer instructions. Portable heaters are kept away from combustible materials, including paper, cardboard and textiles. Adequate clearance is maintained around equipment. Damaged heaters are removed from use immediately. Extension leads are only used where approved by the manufacturer. Temporary heating equipment does not obstruct escape routes or exits. Heaters are switched off when rooms are unoccupied. Simple checks and safe working practices can help protect employees, customers and visitors throughout the winter months.
At home Portable heaters are also commonly used in homes during colder weather. Remember to: Keep heaters at least one metre away from furniture, curtains and other combustible materials. Never dry clothes directly on heaters. Place heaters on level surfaces where they cannot be knocked over. Switch heaters off when leaving the room or going to bed. Fit smoke alarms on every level of your home and test them regularly. A few simple precautions can help prevent fires both at work and at home.
